Best Spa Bed for a Hotel or Spa?
Choosing a spa bed sounds simple until you’re the one signing off on it — and then it’s suddenly a decision that affects your therapists’ backs, your guests’ comfort, your treatment room turnover, and your budget all at once. Hotel spas and day spas don’t need the same bed, and getting this wrong is an expensive mistake to fix later.
Here’s how to actually think through it.
Start with how the bed will be used, not what looks nicest
The single biggest factor is treatment volume and treatment type.
- Hotel spas typically run longer, more varied treatments — massages, facials, body wraps — often for guests who may need extra comfort or mobility assistance. Electric height-adjustable beds earn their keep here: your therapist can raise or lower the bed silently between clients without breaking the relaxed atmosphere, and guests find it easier to get on and off.
- High-volume day spas doing back-to-back 45-minute massages all day need something built for durability and quick turnover more than luxury height adjustment. A sturdy wooden spa bed with a fixed or manually adjustable backrest is often the more practical, cost-effective choice.
- Mobile or multi-room setups — where the same bed might move between rooms or even off-site — need to prioritise weight and fold-down portability. A portable massage table wins here over anything electric or heavy.
The features that actually matter
Weight capacity. Don’t just check the stated maximum — check it against your actual client base and treatment style (deep tissue work puts more downward pressure than a light facial). A bed rated for 150kg static weight isn’t necessarily fine for 150kg of applied pressure during a firm massage.
Motor noise (for electric beds). This is the one people forget to ask about until it’s too late. A spa is meant to feel calm — a motor that whines or clunks when a therapist adjusts the height mid-treatment breaks that instantly. Ask for a demo or a video of the bed actually being adjusted before you buy, not just the spec sheet.
Upholstery and hygiene. Spa beds get wiped down between every single client. PU leather or vinyl upholstery that’s easy to disinfect without cracking over time will save you money in re-upholstering costs within the first year or two — a cheaper fabric that degrades under alcohol-based cleaners isn’t actually cheaper long-term.
Face cradle and armrest comfort. Small detail, constant complaint if it’s wrong. If guests spend 60+ minutes face-down, a poorly padded or badly angled face cradle is the single most common client complaint in massage therapy — worth testing in person if you can.
Warranty and local support. A spa bed is a piece of equipment you’ll use daily for years. Check what happens if the motor fails on an electric bed 18 months in — is the supplier local, and can they actually service it, or does it need to be shipped back?
Wooden vs. electric: the honest trade-off
